After occupying the city during the Civil War, troops converted the stately hotel into a military hospital. Legend has it that this was the famous "St. James Infirmary" immortalized in New Orleans' blues history. Another story has it that one of the current first floor guest rooms was used as a meeting place for early plotters of the Texas Revolution.
