A first timer, I had never stayed in SF overnight, opting instead for the Motel 6 in Sunnyvale. My friend Andrew, who is a connoisseur of fine things, wholly recommended this place. So, we stayed there for 2 nights. At first, on the phone, they ask if you want a sink in the room for $10, and you say yes. The rate was then $80 per night. When we got there, we were surprised that the rooms are so small. Lots of unique details make this place what I would consider very European. The rest rooms are shared, down the hall, like we had when we were in college in Madison.
The first thing I noticed was that we were in the middle of everything in SF, and everything exciting was within walking distance. Normally, I would park the car, have a good time, then drive back. This time, we had a good time, and stayed. We had dinner at the Italian restaurant below, which was very exclusive, and very reasonable. Had a great lasagna. The oldest Italian restaurant in the US, since 1886. The next morning, we walked to a real nice local restaurant and had breakfast. The cable cars are a block away, and it is absolutely great to go on them. We went to downtown SF, shopped, and got back on the cable car. Wow.
Well, what about the shared bathroom? I didn’t really like that until I pulled the chain on the water closet. So, that is what they are like…The shower is really nice, with a towel bar providing heated towels. The room has a portable heater, which really worked well. The sink in the room was really old and really nice. Everything is spotless.
Summary: Totally a classy place. Ambience galore. You can impress anyone who has a little class. Very historical. I really think that it is amazing that someone would keep something like this running since 1906 (100 years). I’m going back to do the penthouse: totally romantic.
